Paul Tillich was a Christian existentialist philosopher and was one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. One of his landmark books was, ‘The Courage to Be’. Among other things, Paul focused on the interrelationship of psychoanalysis, existentialism, and religion. In his works, Paul explored the concepts as existential anxiety and the demonic. Carl Rogers was one of the founders of humanistic psychology in the 20th century. He was known for his person-centered approach to psychotherapy. One of his landmark books was, ‘On Becoming a Person’. Among other things, Carl focused on the ability of human beings to be able to direct their own destiny. He emphasized the therapeutic qualities of congruence, empathy, and unconditional positive regard as ways therapists can help the client to be more authentic and to actualize themselves. The ideas shared between Carl and Paul are relevant today in this time of polarization in our local, national, and global societies.
